Summer Skincare Tips for Dry and Oily Skin

Skincare is key! You should be taking care of your skin all year round but the summer heat can take a toll on your skin more than you think. Oily or dry skin, your skin can benefit from hydration, exfoliating, and more importantly, tons of SPF to protect it from the sun’s damaging UV Rays. However, both skin types can face its unique challenges so your skincare regimen should be different. While dry skin does rather well in the summer heat, the sun can ruin the skin by removing its essential oils whereas oily skin can expect to see more sebum or oil production from the glands due to excessive heat. This goes for all skin types, especially yours! It’s best to avoid heavy moisturizers and lotions. Try lighter water-based moisturizers with long-lasting hydration.

Gently exfoliate your skin once a week. Any more than twice a week can dry out your skin. This will help prevent your face from looking dull.

Use Gentle Cleansers.
Since you have dry skin, you want a cleanser that doesn’t strip it of its natural oils. Using a gentle cleanser morning and night will do less damage as it helps rid the skin of any dirt.

Try Hydrating Facial Masks.
To give your skin an extra boost of moisture, these are great to include in your evening routine after a long hot day. Your skin will thank you for it.

Lower Water Temperature.
Hot water can dry out your skin. Turn the temperature down to warm or lukewarm water to cool off after a long hot summer day.

Use A Humidifier.
Air conditioned rooms can make dry skin even drier. Get a good air humidifier for your room to help keep you hydrated during the summer.

Use Gel moisturizers.
For oily skin, it’s important to find products that will decrease the oil being produced. Look for lightweight moisturizers that will not leave your skin feeling extra greasy. A gel moisturizer, for example, is a good type of product that will hydrate your skin and give you a matte finish with no residue.

Use Salicylic Cleansers.
Even if your skin isn’t acne prone, using a salicylic cleanser will gently remove any impurities on your face without over drying.

Toning oily skin is important because you want to balance out the skin after you cleanse. They also help minimize your pores. Just make sure your toner is oil-free.

Mattifying Facial Mask.
The key is to control the oils on your skin. This is why a mattifying facial mask, like a clay mask, is ideal so it can help remove any excess oils on the skin’s surface.

Use Oil Free Sunscreen.
SPF is important for any skincare routine but people with oily skin need to have a sunscreen with an SPF 15 or more that doesn’t make you look extra shiny. Go for an oil-free or a tinted mineral-based SPF product. These will absorb the oil and stop more from being produced.

Blot Your Face!
Oily skin can be annoying, especially if you wear makeup. It can cause your perfect foundation to slip as the hours go by. Keep a small pack of blotting sheets with you to keep the extra shine away.
