Focusing on our goals and resolutions for the New Year can sometimes be difficult. For the first few days or weeks, we’re focused and strong, but as the days go on, our resolve starts to diminish. Often times, all we need is a little boost from a courageous and intelligent person.
With these quotes, all you need to do is hang them somewhere you can see them. Repeat them and turn them into a mantra. Speaking something into existence works, and just believing in it is the first step.
“I used to want the words ‘She tried’ on my tombstone. Now I want ‘She did it’.” – Katherine Dunham
Trying is the first step to succeeding at anything. Katherine Durham was aware of this until she decided that there was something infinitely better than trying – succeeding. When you set your sights on a goal, you may not accomplish them the first, second, or even tenth time. The point is to keep going until you do.
“Winning is great, sure, but if you are really going to do something in life, the secret is learning how to lose. Nobody goes undefeated all the time. If you can pick up after a crushing defeat, and go on to win again, you are going to be a champion someday.” – Wilma Rudolph
Working perfectly with the above quote, Wilma Rudolph definitely knew how to lose since she was a professional runner. She definitely “did it” when she won three gold medals at the 1960 Summer Olympics, but she also had many losses before then. Losing didn’t make her quit. Losing didn’t make her give up her craft. She took her losses and turned herself in a gold medalist.
Take your losses and learn from them. Allow them to shape you into a better person and use them as the backbone for the success you find.
“Doing the best at this moment puts you in the best place for the next moment.” – Oprah Winfrey
Oprah Winfrey is possibly the most successful black woman in the world and one of the most successful people, in general. You might find yourself procrastinating and putting off things that will add to your success. DON’T. In the words of Oprah, do your best at this moment and every moment because it is setting you up for the next moment.
“Courage is the most important of all the virtues, because without courage you can’t practice any other virtue consistently. You can practice any virtue erratically, but nothing consistently without courage.” – Maya Angelou
Your dreams and plans might seem farfetched to others, but remember to have the courage to continue. It is easy for others to speak down on your ideas, and it’s even easier to believe them. Have the courage to ignore them. Have the courage to persevere. By staying firm in the beliefs of your ideas and yourself, you are setting yourself up for the greatest success.
“It’s a long old road, but I know I’m gonna find the end.” – Bessie Smith
The journey to any goal is a long one, and sometimes you might feel the need to drop all your things and turn back. Success isn’t a one shot deal and you’re done. It’s a winding road with many obstacles in the way. Persevere and be courageous. Continue along the road because eventually it ends and nothing will beat the feeling you get once you get there.
As we charge head first into 2017, our goals are some of the biggest things on our mind in these first few months. Stay strong in your goals and keep going until you accomplish them!
