5 Best 90’s Soundtracks We Love

5 Best 90’s Soundtracks We Love

When I look back on the 90’s pop culture, I can’t help but feel that decade nailed it when it came down to movies and music. As someone who loves films and music with a passion, it’s hard to ignore the stellar music soundtracks that were released during that time. You had R&B/Hip-hop films being made alongside Hollywood blockbusters. Both of which had their soundtracks introduced a lot of upcoming artists to a more mainstream audience. Most of the 90s soundtracks are still considered classics today. So let’s take a look at some of our favorites:

1.) The Bodyguard (1992)

You know we had to include the soundtrack to the 1992 flick The Bodyguard! The contemporary r&b songs by Whitney Houston catapulted her to mega-stardom. The single “I Will Always Love You” by Whitney Houston blasted through every pop and R&B radio station across the country and the world. Songs like “I Am Every Woman” and “ I Have Nothing” also contributed to the success of the album reaching single charts. The Bodyguard soundtrack remains one of the best-selling ones of all time.

2.) Soul Food (1997)

The music from Soul Food is classic. You can blame producer Babyface for that. In 1998, the soundtrack became certified double Multi-platinum. Not too bad, huh? With R&B/Hip-hop tracks like “A Song For Mama” by Boyz II Men and “What About Us?” by Missy Elliott Timbaland and Total on the soundtrack, you bet we are putting this album on this list.

3.) Waiting To Exhale (1995)-

Another legendary soundtrack makes it onto our list. Filled to the brim with some of the 90s best-selling artists, Waiting to Exhale garnered strong critical acclaim upon its release. It swept up tons of awards including Grammys, Billboard, and American Music Awards. TLC, Faith Evans, Patti LaBelle, and Mary J. Blige perform standout songs. And of course, it never hurts to include Queen of Pop Whitney Houston in the soundtrack to your movie either. Her song “Exhale (Shoop Shoop)” received much praise from critics and fans. It eventually became certified platinum.

4.)  Space Jam (1996)

Not only did the live action/animated movie Space Jam featured sports legend Michael Jordan, it also had amazing talent on deck to make some awesome tunes. This soundtrack dominated family households in the 90s, especially mine. Sure, it may have introduced people to R.Kelly thanks to his world-famous song “I Believe I Can Fly”. But we have to keep in mind this album featured many other fantastic artists such as Monica (“For You, I Will”), Seal (“Fly Like An Eagle”), D’Angelo (“I Found My Smile Again”), and All-4-One (“I Turn To You”). The soundtrack made it to #2 on the Billboard charts. Even today, just listening to this makes you want to “Fly Like An Eagle”.

5.) Friday (1995)

One of the funniest films of the 90s also had a dope soundtrack. So we have to include Friday on this list. It debuted at #1 on the Billboard charts for two straight weeks. Then, it stayed for 6 weeks on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Album charts. A significant hip-hop film of its time, the soundtrack featured artists like Dr. Dre. His single “ Keep Their Heads Ringin” was a huge hit, debuting #1 on the Hot Rap charts. The double platinum movie soundtrack is still considered on the of the 90s best soundtracks.
